Run-Tastic

>> Thursday, July 23, 2009

Well folks, I have changed. I would like to dedicate this post to Amy & Alan. After all they are the ones who have really helped me with this life -change.

I am now a runner. Its true. And I have the outfit to prove it!

In the past I have been anti-cardio, anti-exercise, but they have changed that for me. In preparation for the upcoming stake trek, I have been working very consistently. Running and stretching, lunging and squating just about everyday for the last week and a half.

And I feel great! I feel pretty cool. I feel, well, RUN-TASTIC!!!

In an attempt to blog daily....I composed today's scribbles...

I thought I was going to have an adventure today. I suppose going to the dentist could be considered an adventure. Or in some cases errands could be an adventure. I talked to my parents (who are in Russia serving a mission for our church) about THEIR adventures and I planned for my future adventure (relocating cross-country). But, there wasnt any particular new adventure in the day. Unless one counts the dentist, errands or lazily lounging in bed on my day off as an adventure.

I did enjoy the company of some old friends, felt the comfort of a 9 month old resting on my chest, laughed in the company of new & old friends and generally enjoyed my day.

ps- the photo has nothing to do with my day, it is merely a symbol of, well, the joy I feel with days off. I caught this beauty on my most recent drive to hwy 1!

Shan-Louise

>> Sunday, July 19, 2009

At the express interest of my cousin, Michelle, I am posting this entry.

Today at our regular Sunday Supper, somehow nicknames came up.  No one really knew that I called my sister Fish (her real name is Trisha) and then I divulged that she calls me Shan-Louise.

All growing up, my sister wanted me to have a middle name. I didnt have one.  She wanted to have something catchy to call me. Most people shorten Shannon to Shan and call it good. Thats really been the only nickname I've had. Well, that and Spaz or little one. (curteousy of Rich Brandon. thanks Rich)

Then one day it just evolved. My sister got her wish. She could now stand clear cross the house and shout in full voice "Shan-louise!"Its stuck. Although, she is the only one that calls me that.

But upon reflection Michelle and I decided that we find comfort in nicknames. Its an expression of love and closeness.

Beached Whales

Curious?

I am going to pose a question that was recently asked of me.  Take a moment and reflect on your answer.

Question: "Why do beached whales stay beached?"

**** dont jump ahead until you have thought about an answer ****

Here is the situational dynamics of a beached whale:

beached whale is a whale which has become stranded on land, usually on a beach. Beaching is often fatal for whales, as they become dehydrated and die. Some die when their lungs are suffocated under their own weight or drown when high tides cover their blowholes. Humans sometimes try to save beached whales; however, such efforts are not always successful.

Interesting to think about, right? My Auntie and I were talking recently about a big decision I had made. (dont jump ahead to that either folks. quit being so antsy!) I was nervous and wondering if I could really pull through, if I could manage it, if it was right, if I should...well, you get the point. She stopped me and asked that question.

It was a question that stopped me dead in my tracks. I dont think I ever answered her. I dont know. They are big. I dont know that they are super intelligent, but really I had no clue. her answer was simple and effective in redirecting and reminding me of my path.

Answer: "They are too afraid to get back in the water."

Yep. There you have it. And now, placed in a prominent place in my room hangs a qoute. The qoute? "You are not a beached whale." I like it. Lets liberate our personal beached whales folks! Get back in the water and swim back to where you belong - the big, big ocean. Whales dont belong on the shore. Sure, the sandy beaches are nice and inviting. But, that isnt the whales rightful place.

Oh, the big decision? You want to know?

After much prayer and consideration, I am moving to Washington, DC. I am swimming into the big ocean folks! Here comes a cross - country drive and a big big adventure!

Boundaries

As a product of my fathers teaching, I am a reflector.

Each time a life experience occurs, I try to pause and ask a few questions: "what just happened?, what did I learn?, do I need that again?, etc."

The last year has been a continual round of those questions. Also saturated in my mind is his famous phrase "its only a wasted experience if you didnt learn from it." I like that phrase because it reminds us that each experience in life can be good and useful if we actually use it.

So, I have been pondering lately.  Pondering about what the last year has brought me and what I have learned.  For a while I felt as though my time has been wasted - that I needed to be doing something different; more. But, I think I was wrong. The changes and growth have been subtle and comprehensive, perhaps even a slow exponential occurrence.

For me it can all be summed up with one word.

Boundaries. As defined online, it means "Something that indicates a border or limit."

This past year I have learned my own boundaries, how to set boundaries with others, what boundaries I am comfortable with and establishing non-negotiable ones. I have learned more about the Lords boundaries, physical boundaries and even the fact that one can push and change once rigid "I cant do that" boundaries with a little help and work.

As I was at the temple yesterday, the thought occurred to me that "even the sun has its bounds." Life is a constant effort to control, tame and shape our spirits while in "this tabernacle of clay." Our physical, mortal bodies prefer not to have boundaries. This body of ours doesnt like to be controlled and tempered. The flesh likes to run about, lazy, sloppy and relaxed.  The Lord knows that with some bounds, limits, controls/stops, we can teach our bodies and spirits to be something more. Something greater. We can be refined, strong and more like Him.

Boundaries give us strength and shape. It is a part of the order of Gods earth.

PS - I got that lighting shot during an incredibly rare dry lighting storm we had here about a month and a half ago.  It lasted most of the night and was one of the most beautiful scenes of nature I have had witness to in my life.  The night sky was constantly lit up by beautiful bolts of lighting. The sky would go dark and then, almost violently it would be illuminated by white fire! For a moment I thought I was in a different state because of the amount of lightening we received.  It was quite a show.

It also inspired me to learn more about photographing lighting. I messed around with it during the night, but only got a couple shots successfully. Next time I will be better prepared :)

The rest of my DC Trip

>> Thursday, July 16, 2009

Well, the rest of the trip was fantastic.  In the evening was a cruise along the Potomac River with ice cream after. Saturday brought the east street market & brunch.  My little group then toured downtown dc, stopping at the Library of Congress to see Jefferson's personal library on display, the botanical gardens and a photo shot at the capitol.

In the afternoon was a bbq with some great mingle - action.  Afterwards we all prepped to go see the fireworks.  I ended up on the capitol lawn.  What a show - prior to the fireworks, Barry Manilow, Natasha Beddingfield and Aretha Franklin entertained us.  During the fireworks display was an amazing military fife & drum combo.

What an experience to be at our nations capitol hearing the sounds of drums and flutes...around me were children on parents shoulders, a proud display of flags and patriotism and in the sky the reminder of our great nations history. I was proud to be an American.

Sunday was a great morning of church (held at the DC temple visitors center). What a spiritual uplift! So many strong, active mid-singles gathered at the Lords house. Perhaps the crowning event of the weekend.  The spirit was strong and the music and speakers powerful.  We gathered down the street at a park for some lunch. That concluded our conference.

I am so glad to have had the opportunity to attend such a great event.  It was very enriching and fun.

Stay tuned for more adventures!

Day 2 of my DC adventure...July 3

July 3, 2009

Yowsers. nothing says tired like a red-eye flight. I was greatful for my eyemask and ipod to provide about an hour of sleep. Its now 835 dc time - the sun has helped to trick me into being awake, but I am a little snoozy...the adventures of jet-setting!

I sit here on the metro riding into dc metro to meet up with Russel and begin the actual conference part of my trip.  Its so lush here - i forget how green the east coast is.  One pays the price of humidity and frequent rain showers, but it is so green! Sacramento is in the midst of summer - a dull, brown affair. At least here on the east coast you reap green with the heat...

I would like to thank the government for the next part of my story. You see, I got into dc around 645am. By the time I got my luggage which was gate-checked due to full cabin capacity, it was about 7:20-7:30.  At this point I was to take the DC B30 to get to the greenbelt metro station. Well, folks, the Friday before the 4th is a holiday! Of course.  Thererfore, the buses werent on regular schedules.  Apparently, 940 was the earliest bus in. I was not in a position to wait two hours. Not after flying for 5+ hours and having a 2 1/2 hour layover in the diry LAX. The supershuttle wasnt super at all at $37 bucks a pop! So, in true Shannon style, I put on my selling hat and decided to make something happen.  There was a nice gentleman on a green cellphone dubbed “green -cell phone” and a nice lady standing next to me waiting for the same bus.

It was cab time.

Now, because of the holiday schedule and the holiday in general, business was slow.  Picture a nice fleet of shiny white taxis (are they only yellow in NY?) waiting curbside.  Being smart, i know they are hurting for business. So, I go and start talking rates.  Remember, I am a short, white “little” girl.  No one really expects me to talk the way I do.  Its fun.  The rates were “metered” and at least $65. They try to use reverse selling to get me in the cab.  Reminding me that with the holiday the bus schedule is slow and they can go “right now!”

Ahem, I know that.

I use the whole bird in the hand line and begin talking them down. No budging. They warm up a little and wonder where I am going.  I want to go to the greenbelt station. They want to take me ALL the way to dc. I thank them & walk away. (disineterest and having “other options” is an excellent tactic.) I then went and rounded up a 4th person and came back determined to negotiate to a flat rate of $60. $15 bucks per person was reasonable in our situation.

After the fourth recruit was in place, I came back to the cabbie station to talk final cost.  They were pretty stiff folks. At first they werent going to negotiate a flat rate.  I began to remind them that business is slow.  They nodded - and I continued that we were here and willing to pay a reduced flat rate.  Back to the meter issue.  But the black guy heading up the crew was quite impressed with my skills stating that I was really a good talker! Hah. He has no idea - finally all those years of being a chatty cathy are paying off! That, and he didnt have a clue about my dads barganing skills. (I did ya’ proud dad)

Well, I held firm - I told them I knew they could do a flat rate at a lower cost since we were standing there. I was directed to the cabbie.  This is the extra treat. He was russian. No one likes a good bargain and negotiation like a russian man.  I go over and he insists that the meter is the meter. No negotiation. I walk away. Shortly after, he walks up to me and asks what I want to pay. $55. He said no way and leaves. (We are high-time dancing at this moment). I say, alright, $60.  He says $62. I hold at $60. He says we have a deal. Everyone is happy. The four of us load into the car and off we go.

On the way, I ask Michael (probably originally Mi-k-ellle) quesitons. He is a true russian with very few words and no smiles. I wanted to be friends by the end of the trip to the metro. He starts to open up and offer an extended trip into dc for a reduced rate of $20 per person. Progress.  He has offered a gesture of interest. In the end we decided it wasnt good because we were each going different directions in dc, but we all laughed.

I then asked Michael if he was originally from Russia. You can hear a concealed smile in his voice as he asked “why do you say that?” I mention the cyrillic newspaper and the accent.  If you watched him closely at that point, you would have seen a discreet nod of approval.  And the pride of the motherland seems to almost take over Michael as he states that he is from St. Petersburg.  Ah, yes, I have been there I tell him.  Again, concealed happiness that I have visited his great country.  He continues to open up by asking me if I knew any Russian.  This would be the final and true test of my small talk - a test of his ability to allow entrance into his world. “nyet.” “nyet?” We exchange small words and he is visibally pleased with my meager attempt to share my limited russian.

In the end we were friends. Spasiba, I told him.  He  smiled, I think. He then wished me good health in russian - and asked if I knew that phrase. I didnt, but I repeated it to him several times in hopes to remember.  He nodded that I had it right, a final tribute to our new friendship.

Welcome to sunny DC. California has hit your city in a whole new way!

Day one of my DC Adventure...July 2

July 2, 2009

nothing like a good flight to get me in the mood to write.  I am in good spirits these days...work is a waste - nothing like a demotion and pay cut to help one really get a good swift kickin the pants.

I always have so much rolling around in this head of mine! Currently i am sitting next to two really nice guys.  Love it.  Out of all the seats, i get two of the nicest, young best-looking guys to sit next to. Charmed life? I think so.

I am loving my new technology.  This macbook pro is pure genious.  Seriously.  I havent even really put everything on it, and I am just LOVING it.  I also got a free lil’ ipoud touch.  That is pure genious too. In the great words of kip - “yes, i love you, you see, but still, I love technology.” Perhaps one day i will sing that to my future husband at our wedding reception.  It will impress everyone, I am sure.

I dont know why i enjoy writing on planes so much.  Flights can get soo incredibly akward.  I mean we are shoved into small seats, breathing recycled air, and we are forced to spend this time with the same random strangers to get to the anticipated destination.  And yet, in the middle of this stale breathing cramped zone, i find inspiration and a sense of clarify. I am not sure that reflects well on my mental state. This writing on planes has been an exciting thing for me ever since college....ten years ago.  Fascinating...

I am excited to head out to DC - this should be a fun weekend. Especially with independance day on Sat..besides, Adam Neilson is my future husband whom i will meet this weekend (according to russ-eek.)

Life is interesting and as I get older I am really trying hard to be wise - to learn, grow, be myself and do some good.  I am constantly trying new things and starting to really believe in the ideas i have.

Most recently I have decided to push forward (full-speed ahead) with the whole “undercover slips” idea.  I am about to start on the documentation of the whole thing.  I like it and I think it will be successful. It is all about modern, modest, fun and vintage fashion appeal.  A way to accessorize and customize your wardrobe.  Its a slip extender.  I am goig to write the copy for the site right now!

Good times.  Check in later for more updats....the blog is www.undercoverslips.blogspot.com. This intellectual property belongs to me and is protected, so dont be steezing it, k?? I will have to sic my lawyers on you....

Time

>> Wednesday, June 24, 2009

Yes, its about 2am and I ought to be asleep. However, for those that know me, you know that I am an extreme night owl.

I was cleaning and organizing (a sort of therapy for my mind) and came across a list I made for myself a year ago yesterday along with a partial journal entry.

What was on the list and in the journal entry didnt shock me so much - the thoughts were fairly familiar and the tasks could have been written yesterday. What gave me reason to pause was the fact that its been a year.

A year.

Time comes and goes with little control. I have lightly reflected on the last year and resolved to be more aware of my minutes and happy in my heart. Because in another year, that time will have passed, I will be that much older and just as close or as far from the place I'd like to be.

Its funny how that works.

In my 7th grade zoology class, Mr. R had a quote that has stuck with me over the 15 years since sitting in room 4b.

time will pass, will you?

Nothing says pithy like dissection mixed with the smell of formaldehyde. All the same, its never a question of time, its a question of what we do with it.

Here's to another year better spent.

Tribute to my father

>> Sunday, June 21, 2009

Today is a day we celebrate Fathers. Publicly.

I have always felt a little funny about these types of holidays. Not because I dont love or appreciate my father, but because I feel like that celebration should be more than just a perfunctory holiday. (that word is for you dad). I hope that my father knows of my love and appreciation on a day-to-day basis, not just once a year.

Since today is a day of celebration & honor, I want to express those things towards my father.

He has loved me - unconditionally, even when I didnt know how to return that love, what that love meant or even how to hug. A patient man. He has taught me how to garden, use tools, build and fix things, expand on my creative ideas and how to maintain dignity. I have learned to temper myself as I watch him hold his tongue in situations where words would be an easy, but destructive comeback. I have learned to be strong and resolute, to believe in myself and to enjoy the rich blessings of the gospel & of service.

These are a few of my favorite things. Oh, yes. Music. I have enjoyed the Simmons tradition of bursting into song frequently. And making up lyrics to well-known songs to suit the situation. I have appreciated his dry humor, comical antics, wonderful bear hugs, delicious cooking and a whole lot more.

I would write more, but I cant for two reasons. One, he's not dead. Its simply Fathers day. We're not memorializing him folks! And two, I have church responsibilities to run off too. I am after all, his daugher and a "Simmons girl" which brings responsibility and active participation in life & in the chuch.

So, I love you dad and hope that my well-lived life is a tribute to your Fatherhood.

So, I wish I had a camera attached to my car...

I was driving through Rocklin on my way to Folsom early this evening when I was very distracted and mildly blinded by a gigantic metal rooster. It could have very well been a chicken. I couldnt stare too long for fear of causing an accident. It was very bizarre folks. A huge shiny, silvery statue in the middle of suberbia. Huh?

Atop a barn, it could have made sense. But topping a stucco mall marquis? In Granite Bay? Hardly the the place one references for agricultural roots.

Again, I wish I had a camera.

Welcome California summer. I am glad you are finally here.

I've arrived....

>> Sunday, June 7, 2009

Well, folks, can you tell my vacation ended? This was my first week back at work. I havent posted at all this week!!!! There is quite a bit to catch up on, but last nights bit was quite funny.

Some friends and I gathered at a downtown restaurant to celebrate a birthday. As the evening ensued, we got to talking about the "updates" on each others lives. You know, the casual "what is the deal with your life" questioning. Which loosely translated means "who are/arent you dating, how is work, etc."

As we went around the circle of 5, we discussed dating, employment and the general lack of noise in our social lives. When it came my turn, I tried to minimize my ambivalent situation by using the ol' bait and switch tactic. (I learned to hone that skill during my political days...) I simply stated that life was fine and that I wasnt dating anyone. Then I tried to move it along to the next person.

eeks.

They wanted to know just what was going on with work.

It was too hard to keep the natural fall of words from tumbling out. After a brief explanation I sumised that I needed a new job, was trying to decide if I wanted to go back to school, how to be a musician, and if I wanted to stay in Sac. But, I mean, life is good. I laughed. Everyone laughed.

I said, pretty much I am in transition. Big unknown transition.

Then one of the girls asked "When do we arrive?"

Folks, we dont.

Then another friend commented "I work with high risk inmates in a maximum detention facility. I just got my engagement broken off for unknown reasons and I live in the small town of Merced. I've arrived."

Yep. Thats the story of us 20 & 30- somethings.

I'll let you know when I have arrived.

Is it really that odd?

>> Friday, May 29, 2009

I read a brief snippet today that sparked the cinders of reason and internal dialogue.

In an interview today on “The View,” a noted actor, David Pierce, announced his marriage (back in October) to his long-term partner Brian Hargrove. In response to questioning about the prop 8 decision, Pierce called it a "very odd thing" that strangers have a vote on his private decision to marry.

Is it that odd?

Sure, marriage can be private. For most of the world, marriage is private. But celebrities should be well aware that their lives are not private. Its simply a part of the package. I would further contest that while the decision to marry is private, a marriage is an outward (public) symbol of that decision.

But, I digress.

I think what alarms me most about this statement is Pierce’s disregard for the place that our courts hold in society. Rather than respecting the office, and recognizing the place their action takes in the system, he has reduced them to mere strangers.

You see, if Prop 8 was overturned, I can guarantee that comment wouldn’t have been made. No, the courts would be lauded as friends of all humanity. The Supreme Court would be hailed for its decision to uphold liberty and in the process eliminate bigotry. It would have been “a huge step for civil rights.” But, because the courts maintained prop 8 as constitutional, they have become “strangers” and governments involvement is “odd.”

But is it really that odd? Government has always had a say in establishing rules, obligations, laws, and authority for society. After all, that is what our dear founding fathers fought for so diligently a long time ago.

No. What you sir, Mr. Pierce, find odd; is that the majority vote stands for traditional marriage. That’s the oddity you are complaining about. And that’s fine. You have the right to such an opinion. But please, call it as it is. Don’t hide behind the skirts of some “foreign arm of government.” No, I don’t buy it. The relationship between many American citizens and their respective religious marriage officiators are as unknown as a supreme court justice.

Its not that odd. It just didn’t swing your way.

If the club is empty, is free entrance still a deal?

On our way back to the car after the show tonight, Heidi and I walked past a fairly hip club. By hip I mean that it was new-looking, modern, and well, club-like. Outside the entrance, on the sidewalk, there were two bouncers and a guy who probably was the list - keeper.

Now, remember this is Thursday night. Its 11pm and I must say the streets were really quiet. Very little action. Heidi and I were probably the only foot traffic these guys had seen in the last 30 minutes.

Where they were standing was right in the line of the sidewalk were on. Strategic for them, unfortunate for us. It forced us to walk past them and have some sort of interaction, ever brief as it may be.

Sure enough, as we passed by them, they asked us if us "ladies wanted a drink tonight." Bad question #1. We said no thanks. Not taking no for an answer, the list man, in all his smooth-talking ways asked "Not even if I could get you in for free?" Wrong question #2. I told him we were cheap -- that we don't drink. He looked rather dejected at that point and even a bit surprised.

But here is my thought. Its Thursday night, at 11:15pm, on a quiet street and a relatively empty club. How is free entrance a deal to me?

Now, if it was a weekend, the club was hoppin' and I was looking for a fun night, perhaps free entrance would be seductive. I mean, there would be a small token of sacrifice on his end and I would feel like I was getting some special treatment; a deal of sorts.

But, forgive my philosophical musings -- we're not talking trees in a forest. Rather, just a few guys trying to hustle up some opportunistic business. Thought-provoking for me, unfortunate for them.

Better luck next time boys! (just remember, a deal is only a deal if its a deal....and free is never free....)

A funny thing happened on the way to the theatre (no, really it did!)

Tonight was a fantastic evening!

My friend Heidi celebrated her birthday with tickets to the Lion King at the Sacramento Community center. She knows I love and appreciate the theatre, so she invited me to come along. What a fantastic show. The puppetry and costuming is incredible. We both were like children, on the edge of our seats, waiting for the next surprise on the stage. I cant decide what my favorite part was. I really fell in love with Rafiki - her voice was beautiful! The birds and giraffes were so masterfully done, I forgot they were puppets. It was well worth the investment. It is an experience that will stay with me for a long time!

That being said, the funniest thing truly did happen on the way to the show! Heidi and I were walking a couple blocks away from the Convention Center and we happened to cross the street at the same time a unique black man did. I was wearing heels (after all I was going to a show) and the first thing out of this guys mouth was:

"Girl, you been doin' too much in those shoes. Girl."

>>eh, akward!<<

We ignored him.

He asked how we were. We continued to ignore him. Then he took the conversation to an entirely new level by posing this question:

"Girl, can I have one of your shoes?"

>>I'm going to have to say no to that. Pretty sure the Community Center has a no shoes, no service policy. Besides, what would he do with one shoe? Maybe I should just carry an extra one in my purse for strange encounters such as this was.<<<

We told him we were in a hurry.

Like I said, a funny thing happened on the way to the theatre.

Memory on Memorial Day

Memorial day.

I would like to pause and give a heartfelt thanks to all the Military men & women; past & present, who have served our country.

Their service gives me freedom.

My grandfather, Claude Simmons, was one of those men. I didnt get to know him during his brief time on earth. He passed before I had that chance. I do respect and love him. I thank him for his service. For his fatherhood. For his dedication and patriotism.

Below is a slideshow of my trip to the cemetary where Claude is buried. Next to him is Vonda. the love of his life. They lay side by side as they stood in life. Vonda was a patient military wife. She and Claude wrote consistant letters all throughout his service. I recently have read those letters and am in awe of there love and devotion.

In the Fair Oaks cemtary where they are buried, they line the pathways with flags in memorium of this holiday. They also mark each military grave with a white cross and flag. It was a very sacred moment to enter that cemetary and see the many, many white crosses & flags.

We owe a great debt to these soldiers. May you feel some of what I felt in that sacred moment as you watch this slideshow. May you pay tribute, in your own way, to those great men and women who affect your personal liberties.

Ketchup Control

This post in dedicated in its entirety to my brother, Scott....(you better come and read this brother!!)

Yesterday, Scott and I enjoyed some family time. For Memorial Day, we visited my grandfathers grave to pay him tribute and then went to breakfast. We went tot his pretty tasty hole in the wall restaurant off folsom blvd.

In keeping with my meat indulgence, I ordered country fried steak & hashbrowns. (Mom, it was tasty, but not quite like your country fried steak).

Scott ordered the Ranchers breakfast which included a t-bone steak and hashbrowns.

We love hashbrowns. The crispy kind. You can never cook hashbrowns too crispy. Really. After those delicious morsels of fried potato's reach your table, the next step prior to consumption is key.

The ketchup.

As my brother stated yesterday, you must have the most perfect ratio of ketchup to potato. He being older and more experienced, was able to have pretty perfect Ketchup Control. I on the other hand, got in a rush and globbed out too much ketchup one end of my hashbrowns.

Looks like I will need to try it again.

Just remember fair readers. In order to have an excellent experience with hashbrowns, you must learn ketchup control. There must be just a small layer of ketchup across the entire mass of potatoes in order for it to tast right.

Happy eating!

Shannon

Garden update!

So, I have double gardening "duty" this year. Its less of a duty and more of a treat. I have really enjoyed planting and pulling, tending and talking to my little plants. I am helping Auntie with her sweet garden outback and sharing the garden with Peter & Janell at my parents house.

Yesterday I planted bell peppers, jalepeno peppers, zinna's, basil, watermelon, cucumber and zuccini at Aunties. She already planted carrots, tomatoes, potatoes, and some herbs. We also split and stacked wood and admired the logan berries. It was a very pleasant afternoon - the weather was so mild.

I also went over to the house and checked in on all my little friends....they are doing quite well. Below are some pictures to show you what has been going on!

the start of my vacation
is a glorious sensation
its sweet intoxication
worthy of notation
no need for an ovation
i called a celebration
all in anticipation
of this brief emancipation
from routine obligation

ill spend it with relations
and work on some notation
and gardening gestation

ill post my qualification
with some excellent foundations
in hopes of accommodation
for a great new avocation

some musical formation
will complete this dissertation
(or rather an enumeration)
of my grand expectation
for this brief extrication

a longer description
for this time of elation
will wait for a continuation
on a later annotation

now i need hibernation
and a change of elevation
so i close this salutation
and wish you jubilation
till our next communication

Delicious indulgence....

As I sit here writing this post, I am thinking about just what could have occured today to provoke this binge I am about to share....

My siblings will be the first to tell you I am a bit of a bird when it comes to eating. Not due to the amount, but simply due to the severe lack of meat I eat. While most of my family (actually, all of my family) enjoys eating meat on a regular basis, I just dont. I eat red meat a couple times a month at most and other protein a couple times a week. To clarify for any carnivorous souls out there that is 2 servings per week, generally speaking. And yes, I am happy and relatively healthy. And yes to any mothers out there, I make sure to get protein from soy and nuts to substitute. No need to worry....

Focus. Focus back on the story.....

While driving to work today, I had this intense craving for in-n-out. For the next few hours, I took joy in the fact that during my lunch break I was going to enjoy a hamburger and fries. And thats exactly what i did. It was delicious. Sorry sis, I wasnt going to tell you because I didnt want to make you jealous....the hamburger was warm and the tomato was cold. This action alone wasnt too crazy, after all I do eat meat.

Its what happened later that was a little bit of a shocker.

I went about my day and closed the store with my team. And then, it creeped up on me. I wanted to go back to in-n-out and eat another hamburger. Really. I just wanted round two as much as I wanted round one. I asked my coworker, Lexy, if that was bad. She laughed and said "i wont judge you for it." other co-workers reminded me I was about to go on vacation.

So, gentle readers, I went back!

I know, I know. Such random gluttony. 2 hamburgers in one day. In less then 12 hours. I blame it on the need for iron......

Whatever it takes right?

Boy were they delicious.

Tips for Tightwads

>> Friday, May 22, 2009

Are you laughing? Good. I am too!

Let me set up the tip I am about to provide. (And no, dad, its not "plant your corn early." although with all the gardening I am doing lately, that may come in handy.)

My car has been in need of a good cleaning for quite some time now. Today was my day off and I decided that no matter what other deviations may occur from my plan, the vehicular vacuuming was going to happen!

Around the corner from where I live, is a coin operated car wash & vacuum spot. I have been using it for years. I like the industrial strength vacuums. It makes me feel like I am really sucking dirt and debris from the carpet.

So, I scooped up some loose change and headed over. As I pulled up to the machine, I had a flashback. I was reminded of all the times I would come with my sister, to this very place and clean the car! In those early years, she taught me how to really conserve.

Folks, we're talking about the fastest way to vacuum your car interior. I know, this is important stuff! Its serious business when you are dealing with that vacuum timer - I dont like to add more money once the machine is started. (and neither did my sis - she wanted to beat the system and only put in the start up money - back then it was like 50 cents) Here is what you do:
before inserting money:
open all the car doors
take out anything in the interior which can be removed
take out all the mats - shake them out and then fold them over the door(you will want them readily available)
scoot the front two seats all the way back
insert your money and:
start vacuuming on the drivers side, in the front. Push the hose to the passenger side and hustle your tush over there. Then vacuum the passengers front side, scoot the chair up and clean the passenger back seat. The hustle your way around the back of the car and finish up the interior. You will have just enough time to vacuum those mats you strategically placed on the door.

Isnt that fantastic? I think so!

I would like to thank you sis, for extending such wisdom and efficiency. In today's economy its especially useful. For just $1 I can spic & span my upholstery and carpet like nobody's business.

love,
Shan

Kupfer Korner

This post is relatively simple. Although any consistent reader will know that I am a bit of a story teller, a weaver of details and painter of pictures. What one would say simply in 5 words, I would most likely choose to take 25....

This was a moment that reminded me I am glad to be alive to witness the gift and beauty of nature...

I was gardening (checking on the berry vines to be exact) and I stopped to admire the coral-orange geraniums in Kupfer Korner. Just as the name suggests, the geraniums were from my grandpa Kupfers yard. The botanical transplant brought him to my mind. And then, as if to confirm his presence, a hummingbird flew by. He hovered around the orange tree and gingerly made its way to the bright geraniums. I couldnt have been but a foot away. His body was glistening green and I heard the distinct hum of his quick wings. Then, as if on cue, he lited on some close branches and "sat" for just a moment, undetourred by my presence. As quickly as he came, he left, but flew by the near by garden box and did a little "tinkerbell" swoop as if to say goodbye.

I was speechless. Another beautiful encounter with nature. Oh, papa, you would have enjoyed that moment. Maybe you did.

Movement...

Movement.

Its all around us. The wind, the children on a playground, the cars on the street.

Its a relatively simple concept. Unless you're in the middle of a Sacramento summer afternoon. Then, there is a definite absence of movement. No wind, no children outside and even the cars are few because the heat it so sweltering.

Unfortunately, we have been experiencing this weather all too soon. Its not even June, folks! The thermometer has read triple digits for the last three days and the heat has been, well, hot. Sticky. Humid. Quiet. Sit on your porch with a tall glass of lemonade if you dare type weather. Most people dont dare, though. They sit as still as possible, inside, next to a fan, hoping that this will blow over.

It probably wont. I hate to say it Sacramento, but the Summer is here. Grab your sun hat and deodorant, because the thermometer doesnt lie.

The question is, will we let the summer squelch our movement simply because its a little uncomfortable outside? Will we sit protected and motionless inside while the days pass, wasting the season away simply because of its nature? Or will we grab a water bottle and some sunscreen and get into motion?

Sunny Day

In response to a comment left by my father, I write this blog entry....

Dad, unfortunately the adventure to find the cherry blossoms wasnt quite succesful in its original purpose. As I am typing I am laughing out loud remembering my long search in the car up and down the 99 in search of this locale from my dear customer. Really, I mean, the only thing funier than your daughter in the car driving around with no clue of where she is going (in the middle of the day on a weekday) is the mental image of your daughter driving around the agricultural expanse of Lodi and Gault with her Garmin gps on a continual image of black with the occasional yellow line signifing some 2 lane dirt road. Really, it was hilarious!

For other readers, let me remind you that most of Shannons Adventures are at least entertaining and usually comical. It turns out that I missed the cherry blossom window here. We have had pretty spuratic weather and apparently they were long gone.

In the end, I was driving on some gravel 2 lane road and found this fantastic "rustic" barn. I stopped and asked this 87 year-old lady if I could photograph her barn. At first she thought I was interested in fixing and/or painting the "shed". Undetoured by my "no" response she asked if I had any friends who wanted to do it! Plucky woman. But, then again, she was 87 and still driving the tractor and maintaining most of the 20+ acreage. She then gave me a run down of the time line of blooms. So I had a photoshoot instead with her old barn, farm equipment and a cute little lizard basking in the afternoon sun. (photos pending....they are on my camera in an non-uploadable format...)

Mothers Day Tribute....

>> Sunday, May 10, 2009

Mom, thanks for "bee-ing" so wonderful. I'm glad you (and dad) prayed me here so many years ago......

By the way, I know I am your daughter (and knew your influence has molded me) when I:
-stood in the living room here at Aunties house, set the table the night before tomorrows dinner
-stood in front of that table, looked at the wall and straightened it. Just like that.
-bought flowers for all the women in the fam (not just the "moms") and sent Trish a gift in the mail
-was so excited to talk to a customer today who is from the mid-west. We're talking Kansas here folks...

and thats just today...

thank you for these gems:

-"a job worth doing is a job worth doing well"
-love everyone
-there are places to go and people to see
-fill your life with service
-work hard and have fun

There's a lot more where that came from. Needless to say you're always with me, reminding me to be a better woman & reminding me that I am capable of anything.

So, I raise my glass (filled with martinelli's) and celebrate you CJ. Or Cindy Jane, Cindy, Cynthia, Grammy, or Mom.

I love you.

The Parable of the Brown Dove....

Yesterday (May 2, Saturday) was a blustery rainy day. Really, most of the day was just plain wet. I was working a closing shift at Anthro. Part way through the afternoon, a sweet little brown dove flew mistakenly into our store. She landed on a display that was part wood and faced the window. It easily seconded as a simple stoop.

Perhaps she needed shelter from the rain. Perhaps she was confused.

Regardless, she flew in and rested securely on the wood display and started preening. I have to say, it was a sweet sweet sight. Such a little peaceful bird inside our store.

Unfortunately she didnt belong. She was a wild thing, and we couldnt have her in the store where she could possibly hurt or scare a customer. Our store manager was going to call someone to take care of her, but I wanted to help her right then.

I thought it would be fairly simple to catch her from behind and escort her back outside. Our store manager asked me if I was an experienced bird catcher. (i had to stop myself from laughing. I almost sarcastically responded "why yes, in a past job I worked for animal control"-- instead I told him no, but that I had birds growing up)

So, there I was, gloves on and a stepladder underneath. I reached and gently grasped her little body, but round one wasnt firm enough and her frightened fluttering scared me a little and so she flew down to the ground. I was able to then be more deliberate and grab her a bit harder. She still fluttered her wings in my grasp, but I held her close to my chest and told her it was going to be alright. She did calm and was able to pet her sweet little head & chest.

Then I walked outside.

Knowingly she looked around & seemed to realize that was where she belonged. I gave a gentle upwards thrust and released her. In the blink of an eye she spread her little wings and flew away.

I dont know why it was such an emotional moment for me, but it really touched my heart. For a brief moment, I held a wild thing in my hands. I helped escort a wild thing back into its rightful place.

At work, the girls refernced me as the "animal whisperer." I laughed a little, but it was kinda cute.

The experience has stayed with me, sitting on the front of my mind.

I have realized that often in this life, we are like that sweet little brown dove. Misdirected, wet, confused and looking for a safe place to land out of the storm.

Unfortunately that is not where we can stay for long. Inevitably God gently takes us in his hands and escorts us back into our rightful place. We may flutter for a little while and we may not quite understand that his hands are helping us, but eventually, we calm our paniced wings and rest our heads against His chest as he then releases us back into our "wide open" world.

After all, we were not mean to stay forever out of the storms of life. We were not meant to rest comfortably perched in merely watching the world go by.

We were meant to fly.

We were meant to succeed and be free.

Thanks little brown dove for reminding me of God's love.

The Parable of the Cherry Trees

As you probably know, I am a photographer. As a lover of all things beautiful, one of my life goals is to see the cherry trees in DC. I wanted to make it this year. However, circumstances "beyond my control" helped me decide that I couldnt go....

In all honesty, I was so bummed. I really wanted to go.

And then, a micro miracle occurred. I was at work and a customer started talking to me about their upcoming trip to dc. In the small talk that ensued, I shared my desire to go to the cherry blossom festival, etc. They agreed that it would be wonderful. I also shared that I wouldnt be able to make it this year. This family then shared that there were cherry orchards locally. Well, about 45 minutes away. They wrote down directions and even left a phone number if I got lost.

I was so elated!!! Cherry orchards this side of the states. I would get my wish and save some major cash.

The more I thought about it, the more I realized that there are always Cherry Orchards close by. The Lord knows our hearts, desires and needs. He can point us to closer orchards which will provide us with the same desired result but with less stumbling around. His orchards are always closer, easier to reach and the smallest amount of difficulty for the maximum amount of result.

Thats how He is.

I still want to see the blossoms in DC, but that will happen another year.

Poppies and the bees....

>> Friday, April 17, 2009

Greetings! I am so excited about a lot of things right now! First off is this great tool from photobucket that lets me post a little slideshow here! I am sure others know about this, but I am thrilled to be using it.

Today's photoshoot was dedicated to our little honeybee--- some of you may know that the honey bee is in danger right now. They are suffering from Colony Collapse Disorder. The reasons are not really known, but without our little bee friends, nature cant function quite the same.

Poppies are also very close to my heart -- Papa Kupfer (my moms dad) always had poppies in his yard and would send some home with me each time I visited. They remind me of him and they are very happy flowers.

Enjoy this photoshoot - from my heart to yours. If you want a particular picture, let me know:) <3

Indians and the Princess...

>> Thursday, April 9, 2009

Just last week, a coworker of mine mentioned to me "you're always doing fun things."

Hmmm.

I first just let that comment roll away, but then I caught it and thought about it.

Yep, I guess I am.

I think that comes from two things -
1. My natural quirky personna
2. The "get up early and drive real fast" function gene in my being.
For those of you unfamiliar with the UEDRF (short for Up Early Drive Real Fast) gene, let me explain- It may simply be an undiscovered genetic part of you too!

My mother is known near and abroad for her ability to plan and pack. All growing up, we had many family trips that were packed full of museums and hisorical sights (for my father, the history teacher) and sightseeing galore. So as not to miss any portion of the land and terrain we were visiting, my mother would rustle up us 4 children and corral us into the car at the weeeeeee hours of each day. Then we would go everywhere. We would see all kinds of interesting and fasinating places (mostly because my mom worked hard to research what was in the area.) Out loud we all complained about our "vacation" schedule. But, if we had to admit the truth, I think we all would state our enjoyment. (off the record only)

Between those two things I like to spend my days off and free time doing things. Fun things, interesting things, clever things, random things, educational things. I like it.

Most recently I went canoing with a friend down the American River. (thanks dad for the borrowage of red canoe. it worked swell). What made this trip a little uniqe was the text I recieved from my friend Scott. He texted me the following message the day before we were to launch. "Feel free to dress up like an Indian Chief if you'd like."

I think he was trying to be funny. He doesnt know me very well....

Below is our adventure....7 and 1/2 miles of the Indian princess and Huck Finn observing natives, wildlife and burning calories down the river.....

Light Bulbs

>> Thursday, April 2, 2009

For those that live close to me, the last few months have been an intense search for purpose and direction. Reading between the lines -- a new career.

Perhaps I am having a .33 % life crisis (I will be 29 in just a few short months), perhaps I am shifting my wieght around as a "mid single" or maybe I am just eternally restless. I am not quite sure.

In this time, I have grown fond of and had more appreciation for the great founder of the light bulb. Instead of being irritated at all the things that didnt create the end he was looking for, he simply chalked it up to research and education. I am striving to be a bit more like Edison. These are some of the things I have learned that "I didnt know before"

1. Working as a display coordinator isnt in my future. Unless I somehow miraculously become the favored child, change political views and/or make alliances with my sm, ssm, and dsm. (not likely)
2. I really love so-cal. I mean a lot. The job market is tough and cost of living much higher than nor cal.
3. I am not interested in being a lawyer.
4. Masters degrees entitle you to stating (on a professional level) the opinions and life experience you already have.
5. Most masters programs only admit applications in the fall. For the following year. No exception. No kidding. At least I could be real ahead the game if I I wanted to apply for 2010!
6. I like money. Money is functional. I am currently not making very much of it. (I think I knew this before).
7. Desk jobs = complete insanity
8. I like family advocacy work --- dont have the translation of a career path for that yet.
9. Networking is critical.
10. Being on stage is amazing. Performing my music is amazing. Going on a two city tour was beautifully fun! Finishing my cd is slow, but very exciting. living off the money i've made doing all that....not likely!

Tune in next time for more Shannons life lessons resulting from searching for her career path. Now its time for a siesta. A really LONG siesta....

"I was unavailable. I was on location..."

>> Friday, December 5, 2008

Thursday was a great day! For those that know me fairly well, they will know I have a little project I am working on. Its been on my little project list for a long time. A couple years to be exact.

What is it you ask? I am so glad you did.

I have wanted to create a professional cd. I have messed around with bits and pieces of songs, incomplete albums and only shared the music when pressed. But, that time of teetering around is all over folks.

I have about 7 complete songs on my way to ten for my pending album "This thing called love." In conjunction with recording the album, I wanted (and have wanted for some time) to do a quality photo shoot for the album cover. Today was just that day.  A friend from work is a graphic design grad and a photographer. I had shared my vision for the shoot and she got excited! A collaborative effort was born.  The only difficulty was getting our work schedules together.

Today the stars aligned and we went on location to shoot the album cover. It was amazing.  It was so much fun! Her grandparents own about 2000 acres of land past Lincoln.  There were orchards, fields, rice fields, a stream and everything else picturesque you could wish for.  I cant wait to see the frames.

What is the look of the shoot? I am so glad you asked! It is whimsical, high-contrast type scene.  Tim Burton meets project runway. Through in a little alice in wonderland and you have yourself a picture!

Keep posted for more behind the scenes info & the actual pictures!

dye-ing for a change!

Yep. I was. Sometimes a girl needs a change. It wasnt prudent to change my employment, residence, vehicle, social status, skin color, eye color, or shape. I couldn't very well change my name, mailing address or family. So, I did what any reasonable woman does...I dyed my hair. Its not too big of a difference, but it did the trick of satisfying my need for a little spice. I am waiting for the before and after pics from a friend so that I can post them. I am officially a brunette!

Happy Thanksgiving!

There is an old adage that says "better late than never." Good thing there is the word better in front of late...

Thanksgiving was great this year - filled with a lot of love and warmth.  I was able to cook, bake and play bingo (twice!). What more could a Simmons girl ask for?

The day started off  in the kitchen with some extra baking of delicious pumpkin cupcakes.
Diane was cooking up the turkey and it smelled delicious. I thank the bird for sharing his oven warmth with my cupcakes. It is a Simmons tradition to deliver "gratitude" plates to dear friends.  I delivered a few that day...

I then continued the festivities with an early dinner (2pm) at Brian and Andrea's

The meal was delicious and the table looked beautiful.  I was responsible for bringing the cranberry jello - grandma Kupfer's traditional Christmas dish.  I wont be in Sacramento for Christmas, so Brian requested I bring it to the Thanksgiving meal. (he really loves it!)
Andrea's family came to dinner as well. Hannah was delightful - she is starting to put words together in sentences -absolutely cute.  I did however, create a bit of a monster during dinner.

She discovered the tastiness of great grandma Kupfers jello.

She would point to it on my plate and loudly state "Jello!"
To which I would say "Do you want some?"
She then said "YES!" (again, in a loud voice)

I stopped feeding her the jello for a while - to eat my own dinner. She then made noises (much like a growl) and loudly shouted "annon - Jello!" I tried to get her to say please, but all she would say was yes. She happily slurped her jello and I was able to get a thank you from her.

After a rousing game of Bingo, the party was complete and I was off to round 2.  This was at Aunt Dianes.  It was such a fun gathering! The house was filled with happiness & warmth.  I arrived just in time to play bingo. (I cant play it too much!) There was plenty of crazy gifts and good sparkling cider to be had.  I will mention that later in the evening we played spoons. Oh, what fun it is to carry on traditions!

It was a great evening and the desserts were amazing! I didnt want to stop eating.  I also must give recognition to the fantastic sweet potatoe pie that came from the Dunnaway family. I think I dreamt about that dish for two nights in a row. It was so tasty.

After some music, with Aunt Diane at the piano - I was off to round three at Sharelle & Ambre's house. They had a little desert party.  Lots of laughs were had and I continued to eat. I was full for the next two days!!!

I am reminded that I have much to be thankful for. Good friends, family, food, traditions, love, and happiness. I am especially thankful for my parents who are serving a mission, my Aunt who is an amazing woman and has been so generous and kind to share her heart and home with me, and to the Lord for blessing me richly. I have noticed his hand abundantly in my life - he truly has kept a watchful eye upon me and taken special care of me through the last few months.  I am thankful for so very much!

love & faith

Shannon
